Back Pain: Causes, Treatment, and Chiropractic Care

Sciatic lower back pain

Is your mattress causing your back pain?Back pain is a common health issue that affects people of all ages and lifestyles. It can range from a mild ache to debilitating pain that interferes with daily activities. After 40 years of practice, we can’t even count the numerous ways that people find to hurt themselves!

Common Causes of Back Pain

Back pain can stem from various factors, including muscle strains, ligament sprains, disc bulges, and underlying conditions like flat feet or hip stiffness. It often manifests as a persistent ache, sharp or shooting pain, or stiffness in the back. Certain activities, such as heavy lifting, poor posture, and prolonged sitting, can increase the risk of back pain. These days, sitting for long hours undoubtedly causes more troubles than anything else we see.

Treatment Options for Back Pain

Treatment for back pain varies depending on the underlying cause and severity of the pain. Conservative approaches, such as heat therapy, gentle stretches, and over-the-counter pain medication, can effectively manage mild to moderate back pain. We think the word ‘manage’ is an interesting one.

Relieving pain with medications doesn’t mean that the problem is actually dealt with, just that the inflammatory response is brought down. Pain relief with medication is sometimes just buying time until you strain it again and the same problem returns.

Chiropractic Care for Back Pain

3Chiropractic care offers a non-invasive and drug-free approach to back pain treatment. Chiropractors utilize spinal manipulation, also known as adjustments, to restore joint mobility and alleviate pain. They may also employ other techniques, such as trigger point therapy and rehabilitative exercises, to address specific issues and promote optimal function.

For 40 years at our practices, we’ve largely used traditional manual manipulation or adjustments combined with exercise programs to help our patients.

When to Seek Professional Help

While many cases of back pain resolve independently, it’s crucial to seek professional help if the pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms, such as leg weakness or numbness.

Pain is always an alarm going off that something is not working properly. Hopefully, you’re not ignoring your inbuilt alarm systems. Hopefully, when your car’s dashboard shows lights and signals that something is not working, you don’t ignore them!

We’re only a phone call away. We understand that patients don’t always when to see a chiropractor or if we can help. We encourage people to call and chat.
