Golfers Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

What Is Golfer’s Elbow?

Golfer’s elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis, is a condition involving irritation of the tendons on the inner side of the elbow, close to the joint.

Despite the name, most cases are not related to sport. It is estimated that around 90% of cases occur in non-sporting settings.

Occupations that involve repetitive or forceful use of the forearm, such as carpentry or construction work, may increase the likelihood of developing symptoms.

In sporting contexts, activities that involve repetitive throwing or swinging motions—such as tennis, baseball, and golf—may also be associated with this condition.

How Common Is It?

Golfer’s elbow is estimated to account for approximately 10%–20% of elbow-related tendinopathies and affects a small percentage of the population.

It is more commonly reported in individuals aged between 45 and 65 and may affect females slightly more than males.

Common Symptoms

  • Aching or discomfort on the inner side of the elbow
  • Symptoms that may extend down the inner forearm
  • Discomfort that may increase with gripping, lifting, or throwing activities

How Is It Managed?

Management approaches depend on the individual and the contributing factors. Conservative strategies are commonly considered as an initial approach.

These may include:

  • Activity modification
  • Exercises to support strength and flexibility
  • Manual therapies
  • Advice on movement and load management

Muscle strength, flexibility, and movement patterns may be assessed, as these can influence how the elbow is loaded during daily activities.

Where Chiropractic Care May Fit

At Black Chiropractic Group, Dr. Michael Black provides assessment of musculoskeletal conditions, including those affecting the elbow and forearm.

An assessment may include discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and a physical examination to better understand contributing factors.

Care may involve a combination of manual techniques, soft tissue work, and rehabilitative exercises, with a focus on supporting movement and overall function of the elbow.

Additional Information

Private health insurance may provide rebates for chiropractic services. In some cases, patients with chronic conditions may be eligible for a Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, depending on individual circumstances.
